Absolutely this, John. I am known as ‘the fit guy’ and, before the trip, when I told people my goal but also my reservation they’d say ‘You’ll be fine; you’ll do it!’. I hated that and, guess what? I didn’t do it!

In general, most of us (especially men) rarely experience any sense of adventure. The mundanity of daily survival usually takes over.
The identity and fear of failure thread is interesting.
How expectation can change perceptions.
Being known as ‘the fit guy’ has its downside when a person falls short.
Exercise by choice over fun or survival necessity is a relatively new phenomenon and an interesting psychological experiment.
Also, the psychological impact of Whoop data feedback, especially if it’s not good and someone has an event approaching.
